ESPN commentator Derek Rae has admitted that he hopes Motherwell defeat Celtic in Sunday’s Betfred Cup Final.
Writing in his column in the Evening Times website, Rae remarks that although he expects Celtic to win the game, it would be good for Scottish football if the Steelmen triumph.
He said: “I don’t mind admitting that I hope Motherwell are the team lifting the Betfred Cup late on Sunday afternoon. I expect Celtic to win though and set the stage for another treble tilt in Scottish football this season.
“It’s not Celtic’s fault that they are so far ahead of the rest. But our football is at it‘s best when there is genuine competition for honours and not just with a return to two big Glasgow clubs jousting it out.”
Celtic reached the final with a 4-2 victory over Hibs, with Mikael Lustig and Moussa Dembele each scoring two goals apiece.
Motherwell reached the final with a 2-0 win over Rangers thanks to two goals from star striker Louis Moult.
The teams are set to play each other three times in six days in the week ahead.
Following the Betfred Cup Final, Celtic travel to Fir Park on the Wednesday night with Motherwell heading to Celtic Park on the Saturday.
