Celtic want to re-sign Patrick Roberts this summer following his calamitous spell in Spain, Football Insider understands.

The Manchester City winger, 22, was a huge fans favourite during his previous two loan spells with the Hoops running from January 2016 to the summer of 2018.

But his career has taken a downturn after he was loaned out to City's Spanish partner club Girona this season, failing to score a single goal or complete 90 minutes for the La Liga club.

A Celtic source has told Football Insider that the Scottish champions are keeping close tabs on the right-sided winger and his potential availability as they assess the possibility of bringing him back to the club for a third spell.

Roberts has just a year remaining on his City contract and this summer represents their last opportunity to secure a significant fee for the player signed for £11million from Fulham in his teens.

Celtic are keen on taking advantage of Roberts' potential availability despite the exit of former manager Brendan Rodgers, who hailed Roberts as a "brilliant" player and a "big talent".

The left-footed attacker initially joined Celtic on an 18-month loan in three-and-a-half years ago, scoring 18 goals in 78 appearances while winning seven trophies at the club.
