Liverpool have opened talks with Thiago Alcantara over his future at the club, sources have told Football Insider.

The parties are in discussions with his contract at Anfield set to expire at the end of the season.

However, it is believed negotiations with Thiago's representatives over a renewal are not advanced at this stage.

Liverpool are keen to see an improvement in the Spaniard's availability and appearance record before making an offer to the 32-year-old.

The midfielder was heavily linked with Turkish and Saudi Arabian sides during the summer window, but a move failed to materialise before their respective deadlines.

Jordan Henderson and Fabinho both secured big-money moves to Saudi Arabia during the summer window.

Thiago could yet join the ex-Reds duo as injury problems continue to plague his Liverpool career.

The ex-Bayern Munich midfielder is yet to appear in the 2023-24 campaign due to a hip problem.

He has struggled with his fitness ever since joining the Merseysiders in 2021 - and has made just 97 appearances in a Liverpool shirt.

Thiago racked up 28 appearances across all competitions last term – but started in just 21 of those outings.

Liverpool

Liverpool bolstered their midfield during the summer with the signings of Wataru Endo, Ryan Gravenberch, Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister.

The Reds have picked up 13 points from a possible 15 to start the new Premier League season.
