Revealed: Liverpool star Joel Matip could stay - on one condition
Joel Matip could stay at Liverpool if he is willing to settle for a back up role, sources have told Football Insider.
Matip is unlikely to regain a regular spot in Jurgen Klopp’s side and will only continue at Anfield if he accepts a secondary position.
On Saturday (23 September), Football Insider revealed that the club are in preliminary talks with the 32-year-old’s representatives about a contract extension.
Discussions are not believed to be at an advanced stage yet.
Matip’s current contract runs until 2024 and at the moment he is free to reach a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs from January.
The centre-back has fallen to fourth choice in central defence as he reaches the end of his career but Jurgen Klopp is believed to be keen to keep the experienced player within the squad.
The Cameroon international has made four appearances for the Reds so far this season and was in the starting lineup for three of those outings following Virgil van Dijk’s suspension.
Last term Matip made just 21 appearances across all competitions last term in a season that saw the Reds finish fifth in the Premier League.
The defender joined the Reds in 2016 on a free transfer and has made 191 appearances in his six years at the club.
Liverpool are also closing in on a contract extension for fellow defender Trent Alexander-Arnold and have now reached an agreement in principle with the right-back, as revealed by Football Insider (22 September)
