Manchester United have made an approach to sign Tottenham midfielder Eric Dier, Football Insider can reveal.
The Premier League giants have shortlisted the England international as one of their targets to fill the midfield anchorman role next season.
A United source told Football Insider that the club have reignited their pursuit of two years ago, as they’re convinced the Londoners will be willing to let Dier go this summer.
Manager Ole-Gunnar Solskjaer is a big admirer of the versatile 25-year-old, who can also play at centre-back and right-back, and thinks he is “hugely underrated”.
United tried to sign Dier in the summer of 2017 when Jose Mourinho was manager and Mauricio Pochettino subsequently admitted the player had his head turned by the interest.
The 20-times title winners’ need for reinforcements in the centre of the pitch has accelerated following Ander Herrera’s exit to Paris Saint-Germain, Nemanja Matic’s downhill spiral in form and doubts over the future of Paul Pogba.
Dier is just coming off the worst season of his five-year spell at Tottenham in which mixed form, injuries and illness restricted him to just 28 appearances, including 18 Premier League and two Champions League starts.
He has two years remaining on his Spurs contract, that runs until 2021.
