Newcastle United must smash their transfer record if they are to complete a move for Inter Milan star Nicolo Barella this summer, sources have told Football Insider.

The 26-year-old is on the Magpies' shortlist and they have made enquiries over a potential deal.

However, it is believed Newcastle are hoping to land Barella for a fee of just £50million - while Inter value the Euro 2020 winner at closer to the £70million mark following his stellar season in Serie A.

As such, Eddie Howe's side would have to once again smash their transfer record in order to seal a deal for the midfielder.

Newcastle's current record arrival is Alexander Isak - who joined from Real Sociedad for a reported £63million last summer (2022).

The Magpies have made a top-class midfield signing one of their top priorities for the summer window.

Barella would fit the bill, having impressed during the 2022-23 campaign as Inter reached the Champions League final.

His contract at San Siro is set to expire in June 2026.

The former Cagliari star made 52 appearances across all competitions, notching nine goals and 10 assists.

He has racked up 234 total Serie A games and has extensive experience in the Champions League and Europa League.

Newcastle

Newcastle will play in Europe's top club competition once again in the 2023-24 season after finishing fourth in the Premier League.
