Revealed: Spurs overhaul begins, Mourinho plans to build team around £42m man

Jose Mourinho and his Tottenham coaching staff are convinced Giovani Lo Celso is ready to “explode” and become a Premier League superstar.

The Portugese and his allies have high hopes for the midfield maestro, 24, and believe he has the potential to be the team’s architect in the coming years just like Moussa Dembele and Luka Modric once were.

A Spurs source has told Football Insider that the club have set their sights mainly on loans, frees and bargain deals in this summer’s transfer market and exploratory moves have been made.

Among the positions where the club are scouting potential targets are central defence, right-back, defensive midfield and striker.

Southampton midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is a key target for Mourinho and could be one of the rare recruits that comes with a major transfer fee.

One player who is central to Mourinho’s plans is Lo Celso, who, the source explains, he regards as capable of providing industry and creativity and control from the centre of the pitch.

He initially struggled to make an impression in north London after signing on a loan-to-buy deal from Real Betis last summer.

But the versatile operator is starting to find his feet and was the team’s outstanding player in the weeks leading up to the lockdown.

Lo Celso was omitted from the starting XI last Friday in the 1-1 draw against Man United after being troubled by an injury in training.

He did come off the bench for the last 20 minutes and then played the full 90 as he produced a man-of-the-match display in Tuesday’s 2-0 win over West Ham.

He has made eight Premier League starts among 30 appearances in all competitions this season but has yet to register his first league goal or assist.

Nevertheless, Mourinho was so impressed by what he saw of the Argentine he gave the green light in January for Tottenham to exercise their option to sign Lo Celso for £27million, after making an initial loan payment of £15m last summer.

In other Tottenham news, it can be REVEALED that the club have been given big hope of signing 26-year-old who is desperate to join them.
