Rice tipped for new role v Man United 'technically outstanding' West Ham display - pundit
David Moyes could ask Declan Rice to play a more attacking role for West Ham in today’s clash against Manchester United.
That’s according to former Leeds hitman Noel Whelan, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider about the midfielder’s display on Thursday.
Rice scored an incredible solo goal against Dinamo Zagreb in the Europa League, dribbling from inside his own half before firing through the keeper’s legs.
This is not a side of Rice’s game Hammers fans are too used to seeing with the midfielder usually tasked with more defensive duties.
However, Whelan insists the midfielder has always been capable of contributing to the West Ham attack and insisted he may have to do the same again today with Michail Antonio set to miss the game against Man United.
“Rice has too much to offer going forward to be a centre back,” Whelan told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild

“He’s got brilliant feet and he’s so strong and agile. Technically he’s outstanding.
“We saw these qualities in the Euro 2020 final he was excellent. He’s being given the chance to push forward now and that’s exactly what he wants to do.
“As we saw the other night, he can drive straight past players if he wants to.
“He deserved that goal, not just on the night but for the way he has started the season.
“Moyes might ask to see a bit more of that against Man United with Antonio injured.”
Antonio was sent off in the Hammers’ last game against Southampton.
Just days earlier he had won the Premier League player of the month award for August.
