Rio Ferdinand uses Leeds to compare situation of prolific striker at career crossroads
By Danny Wright
Rio Ferdinand has compared Romelu Lukaku’s career crossroads to his own situation at Leeds a decade-and-a-half ago.
The 23-year-old has recently rejected a new contract at Everton and Manchester United legend Ferdinand sees similarities to own situation when at Elland Road.
According to the Mirror, Premier League leaders Chelsea want to bring the Belgian international back to London, should Diego Costa leave Stamford Bridge in the summer.
Ferdinand has suggested that a return to Chelsea will fulfil all of Lukaku’s dreams of major silverware.
“He wants to win titles and play Champions League football,” said Ferdinand in a video on his official Facebook page. “I understand his desire for that. I was in a situation at Leeds. I was playing Champions League football but were we winning? Did we win the league? No.

“The crux of me leaving Leeds was the idea that I was going to win the Premier League. Simple as that. “
Ferdinand was Leeds’ record signing at £18million, but he quit the Yorkshire club in 2002 for a £32million transfer to United, where he won six league titles, three League Cups and a Champions League winners medal during 12 glittering years.
He believes that Lukaku must do the same as, although Everton are certainly a club on the rise, they’re a club that don’t appear to be winning anything major any time soon.
“[Everton] don’t seem to be a team that can offer him what he wants in terms of winning,” Ferdinand added.
“Everton are a big club, but they aren’t winners, they were winners in the 80s and they need to get back to that. They are building to get back to that.
“But there are some players who are impatient and want it now and seems Romelu Lukaku is one of them.”
Lukaku is currently the top-flight’s top goalscorer with 21 league goals to his name.
This season is the first time the Belgian international has surpassed 20 goals in a season and he has fired Everton up to seventh in the league.
Since joining the Merseyside from Chelsea on a loan deal in 2013, Lukaku has scored 83 goals in 157 matches in all competitions.
In other Everton news, the club are reportedly close to sealing an £8million deal.
