Rio Ferdinand pinpoints the player Klopp must sign for Liverpool

Rio Ferdinand believes that Liverpool need to add a leader to the team, someone like Jamie Carragher, in order to get to the next level.

On BT Sport’s Premier League Tonight a fan asked the panel, consisting of Ferdinand, Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard, whether the Reds miss having a leader like Carragher in the team.

Gerrard answered first, as the question was originally directed at him, that the team would always miss a player like Carragher due to his organisational qualities.

Ferdinand then chipped in, revealing he believes the lack of leader is what is stopping the Reds achieving more.

“I do think they’re lacking something like that in the team,” Ferdinand revealed before continuing, “when things aren’t going their way, you get the vibe people are looking around to the bench rather than someone on the pitch and that’s one things they need to change really to take this team on.”

The former Manchester United defender also shared that he believed Klopp would face a tough time buying a player of this nature, saying “there aren’t too many out there in the market.”

The retired defender considered the potential signing of Virgil van Dijk and stated that you just hope he has “the stature, the personality, the presence to lead a team.”

Lampard then pipped up that Jordan Henderson was a leader as he was “vocal” and that the Reds don’t lack one, they just need more.

The three former footballers were talking after watching the Reds draw 1-1 with Chelsea after being in front for most of the game through Mohamed Salah.

Liverpool are next in action on Wednesday when they travel to face Stoke City.
