Rio Ferdinand had some harsh words to say about Tottenham defender Serge Aurier after he gave away a clumsy penalty in the Champions League game against Juventus on Tuesday night.
Tottenham drew 2-2 with Juventus in a pulsating game at the Allianz Stadium, but they did well to get back in the game after going 2-0 down in the first half.
Gonzalo Higuain got the first in the second minute after Spurs went to sleep from a free kick, although the Juventus man looked offside.
And he scored the second from the spot just seven minutes later after Ben Davies clattered Federico Bernardeschi in the box, seemingly not seeing the Juventus midfielder behind him.
Harry Kane pulled one back before half-time but Gonzalo Higuain had a golden opportunity to make it 3-1 with the last kick of the first 45 minutes.
Tottenham defender Serge Aurier brought Douglas Costa down in the box for a clearcut penalty after the Juventus attacker had completely done him for pace.
Luckily for Spurs, Higuain blasted this onto the bar, spurning his chance for a rare first-half hat-trick.
And, talking at half-time, former Man United defender Rio Ferdinand had some harsh words to say about Aurier.
“As a defender I’ve never rated him [Aurier]”, Ferdinand said on the BT Sport live coverage of the game (BT Sport 2, Tuesday, 7pm).
“He goes in too rashly in his own box.”
After the game, Ferdinand added, “It was stupid defending, clumsy. He was struggling and let him get ahead. If Higuain had scored the penalty it’s a different game.”
The second leg of the tie is at Wembley on March 7, with Tottenham now the favourites to progress.
