Robertson may push Liverpool into talks to sign Aston Villa star after Athletic reveal - pundit
Noel Whelan has suggested Andy Robertson will be pushing Liverpool to launch a bid to sign John McGinn from Aston Villa.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed Jurgen Klopp would take his defender’s word almost as gospel.
As reported by the Athletic (June 23rd), Liverpool are interested in McGinn, 26, as a potential replacement for Georginio Wijnaldum.
The report claims Villa would demand a £45million-plus transfer fee.
It is said Klopp has asked Robertson, who is close friends with McGinn, for feedback on his international teammate.
Whelan claimed the Liverpool star would have delivered a “rave review” on the Villa ace.

As such, he suggested the Reds could enter preliminary talks to see if a deal can be struck.
Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “I’m sure you’ve got Robertson giving Jurgen Klopp some rave reviews about him.
“Sometimes that’s what other players do in an international set-up, they give their opinion to a manager. He’s a player that’s well respected by Jurgen Klopp.
“He’s been admired number of years, even in the Championship, has John McGinn. A fantastic player, tenacious, great energy, can score goals and likes to run in behind.
“When Aston Villa came up he got the first goal back in the Premier League, a little run in behind. Someone that can command that midfield area as well and we saw that when he played against England.
“These transfers don’t come overnight. There will be lots of discussions that are needed.”
Liverpool will be without Wijnaldum next season after the Dutch star agreed to join PSG on a free transfer.
Meanwhile, McGinn signed a new five-year contract at Villa back in December 2020.
