Paul Robinson has suggested Man City will offer Ilkay Gundogan a new contract after an impressive start to the season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one said the 31-year-old has an "amazing" ability to score goals from midfield.

Gundogan has made a flying start to the season for Pep Guardiola's side and has already contributed two goals and an assist.

On 24 August, UEFA hailed the Germany international's goalscoring ability by posting a clip of his goal against Barcelona in 2016.

Gundogan has entered the final 12 months of his contract at the Etihad.

Robinson believes the centre-midfielder is an important player on and off the pitch for City.

"The season before last, the goals that he scored, it was amazing," he told Football Insider.

"He proved what a top-class player he is. He can have such an impact on the team.

"Not many players around the world can add the type of goals that he does from midfield.

"The attacking quality that Man City have got, they have the ability to play in a number of ways. Whether it is runs from midfield or runs in behind from Haaland, they can score all types of goals.

"Gundogan is a player that Guardiola will want to keep. He will want to have him for a while.

"From the outside looking in, he is a player with a great attitude whether he is playing or not. I imagine he is a key figure in the dressing room as well.

"You know what you get with Gundogan. He seems like the consummate professional.”
