Robinson delivers verdict on Johnstone joining West Ham after key update

Lukasz Fabianski has been “brilliant” for West Ham but the time has come for the club to sign a new number one.

That is the view of former Spurs and England number one Paul Robinson, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Irons’ interest in West Brom’s Sam Johnstone this summer.

This site revealed last month that the Hammers have set their sights on the 28-year-old and were planning to make enquiries about a potential transfer.

Football Insider understands Johnstone has now told close friends he is “very keen” to return to the Premier League with West Ham next season.

Johnstone is currently away on international duty with England ahead of the European Championship which kicks off later this month.

When asked by Football Insider for his thoughts on Johnstone potentially moving to the London Stadium, Robinson said:

“Fabianski has done brilliantly for them over the years but given his age and the stage of his career that he is at, they need to look at a contingency plan.

“Johnstone is a top, top goalkeeper and he has proved that with his performances this season.

“Two good English goalkeepers have dropped down to the Championship this year but I’d definitely sign Johnstone ahead of Aaron Ramsdale.

“Johnstone was put under a lot of pressure this season and even though they were relegated, he showed that he is more than capable of being a Premier League number one.”

In other news, a big update on the race to sign Odsonne Edouard can be revealed amid West Ham interest.
