Paul Robinson has hailed Toby Alderweireld the “best defender” at Tottenham after he scored the winner in the north London derby on Sunday.

The former White Hart Lane number one, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, urged Jose Mourinho to start the 31-year-old for the remainder of this season’s fixtures.

The centre-half marked his third consecutive start with a goal following his shock axing for the first three matches after the Premier League restart.

The 2-1 victory at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium sees the Lilywhites leapfrog their neighbours in the table.

Mourinho began the restart with Davinson Sanchez and Eric Dier as his preferred centre-back partnership but Robinson is relieved that Alderweireld has been reintroduced.

“I have always said that Alderweireld is the best defender at the club and he should play every week,” he told Football Insider. “Over the past three games he has proved that.

“Against Bournemouth they were toothless but they looked steadier at the back and they are more secure when he plays.

“Yesterday he popped up with a goal and he has that in his locker as well, he’s a threat from set plays.

“He is a leader on the pitch and he should start every game between now and the end of the season.”

Alderweireld has made 39 appearances this season but has not been in automatic pick like in previous years.

He signed a new three-year contract in December that tie him down to the club until the summer of 2023.

In other Tottenham news, Darren Bent has told Football Insider he has seen ‘full-blown scraps’ after on-field incident.
