Paul Robinson is concerned Japhet Tanganga's development may be harmed after Tottenham signed Emerson Royal.

The former Spurs stopper, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, reacted after the summer transfer window closed.

Tottenham confirmed the signing of Royal from Barcelona on a five-year contract on Tuesday evening.

Royal has spent the last three seasons at Real Betis and has contributed five goals and 10 assists in 79 appearances.

Tanganga has been a revelation for Spurs this season with the club backtracking on the decision to let him go out on loan after a dominating performance against Manchester City.

"He's a good player," Robinson told Football Insider assistant editor Dylan Childs.

"He's had seasons at Betis and he has goals in him. But for me, I'd like to see Tanganga flourish.

"I hope the arrival of Emerson doesn't stunt his growth in the team. He's been their best player so far.

"Tanganga has been outstanding and he's a really good young talent. I would like to see him continue getting game stream.

"Obviously that can't happen, it's a squad game. I just hope the signing of Emerson doesn't stunt his growth.

"We are full-back heavy, hence the reason they terminated Aurier's contract but it is a key position for us now."

Royal was one of several players to leave Barcelona as a result of their financial problems this summer.

He featured in three of Ronald Koeman’s side’s league games this season and started the 2-1 win over Getafe last week.
