Paul Robinson waxed lyrical about Tottenham midfielder Pierre Emile-Hojbjerg after it was revealed he has won more defensive duels than any other Premier League player this season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former White Hart Lane number one named the 25-year-old as the “signing of the season” despite initially being “underwhelmed” by his arrival.

Hojbjerg has been ever-present for Spurs in the league this season and across all competitions he has made 38 appearances.

No Premier League player has won more defensive duels than him this season (263) – only Lorient’s Laurent Abergel has won more in Europe’s top five leagues (298). (Wyscout)

A £15million signing last summer from Southampton, Hojbjerg was one of eight arrivals to Spurs in last summer’s transfer window.

Robinson lauded Jose Mourinho for the decision to sign the Denmark international.

“It shows that Mourinho has an eye for a player,” he told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs.

“He knew what system he wanted to play and he knew Hojbjerg was the player he needed to be able to do that.

“Hojbjerg for me is the signing of the season. I was surprised and underwhelmed by his signing at the beginning last summer but he has proven himself to be one of the best defensive midfielders in Europe and that stat proves it.

“He has been a great signing for Tottenham. Every time he is fit he plays. Mourinho trusts him.”
