Paul Robinson has applauded West Ham manager David Moyes for taking the "big decision" to axe Tomas Soucek.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one confessed he has been "surprised" by Soucek's downturn in form over the past 12 months.

Soucek has started just one of West Ham's last four Premier League fixtures.

Football Insider revealed last November the Hammers are looking to sign a replacement for the Czech Republic international and his future at the club is up in the air.

The London club are reportedly interested in Almeria midfielder Samuel Costa.

When asked by Football Insider for his thoughts on Soucek's situation at the London Stadium, Robinson said: "I have been surprised.

"As we know, the second year is always more difficult and that has proven to be the case with him. He has not been the same player over the past 12 months.

"Look, it is not easy when you are in a team that is not playing well. West Ham have struggled this season. Moyes has had to make big decisions because of it.

"Soucek did so well when he first came in. He was effective at both ends of the pitch. He is good defensively and can be a real threat from crosses and set plays.

"Moyes has had to make the difficult call of leaving him out. I think their midfield has been an issue and it might be a position they look to strengthen in."
