Roma are plotting a last-gasp move to sign Manchester United defender Chris Smalling before the close of the European transfer window, Football Insider understands.

The Serie A side have been trying to recruit a new centre-back all summer and moves for Tottenham's Toby Alderweireld and Liverpool's Dejan Lovren have fallen by the wayside.

An Italian source has told Football Insider that Roma are now ready to switch their attentions to bringing in United stopper Smalling by next Monday's cut-off.

The 29-year-old's future at United is uncertain following the arrival of Harry Maguire from Leicester in an £80 million world record deal for a defender.

Smalling has not featured for the Premier League giants so far this season and has not been in the matchday squads for any of their opening three Premier League games.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has Maguire and Victor Lindelof as his preferred central defensive partnership, with Axel Tuanzebe as cover on the bench.

Roma have been alerted to Smalling's lack of action at Old Trafford and they are ready to make a move for the Fulham man before next week's transfer deadline.
