Rooney would be 'great appointment' by Everton after reveal via Sky - pundit

Wayne Rooney would be a “great appointment” if Everton decide to sack Rafa Benitez, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England attacker claimed Rooney with Duncan Ferguson as his assistant would get more out of the players than Benitez.

The pressure is still on the Spaniard at Goodison Park despite their 3-2 win over Hull City after extra time in the FA Cup on Saturday (9 January).

At the game the travelling Everton fans displayed a banner calling for him to be sacked.

As quoted by Sky Sports after the game, Benitez insisted he is not worried about his status at the club.

Rooney told the Athletic last Tuesday (4 January) his boyhood club should be doing better given their squad of players.

Asked whether he thought the legendary striker could be the man to get more out of the squad, Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “I really do.

“I think it would be a great appointment.

“He’s an Evertonian, he loves the club, I think it would be a good appointment.

“Rooney as the manager with Duncan Ferguson as his assistant, I think they would definitely get more out of those players.

“He’s doing a very good job with Derby County.”

Rooney has been in permanent charge of Derby for almost a year and spent two months in interim charge before that.

The 36-year-old has the Rams 11 points adrift of safety in the Championship despite their 21-point deduction.
