Newcastle midfielder Henri Saivet has joined Saint-Etienne on loan for the rest of the season, it was announced on Wednesday.

The Championship club have announced on their official

that the Senegal international, 25, will spent the 2016-17 campaign at the Ligue 1 club.

French website France Football claim the two clubs have agreed the terms of a season-long loan with an option for Saint-Etienne to buy Saivet permanently next summer, although that has not been confirmed.

The nine-cap international joined the Magpies in January in a £5.1million deal from Bordeaux but has made just four appearances to date and only two of those starts.

Saivet last featured for Newcastle at the start of February and has not been involved at all since Rafael Benitez took over as manager.

Les Verts are keen to add to their squad after a poor start to their league campaign. They lost 3-2 to Bordeaux, Saivet's old club, in the opening game of the season.

The Ligue 1 club's vice-president, Roland Romeyer, told French outlet Le 10 Sport last week that Saivet is on their list of targets.

In other Newcastle transfer news, they line up a move for a second Everton player.
