Ipswich Town are closing in on the signing of Blackburn Rovers forward Sammy Szmodics, sources have told Football Insider.

Talks have taken place between the clubs for the 28-year-old Irish attacking midfielder, who ended last season as the Championship's top scorer with 27 goals in 44 appearances.

An agreement is not yet close but Szmodics is keen to join and make the step up and prove himself in the Premier League.

Ipswich face competition from Leeds United, who have also registered their interest in a deal but Szmodics has his sights set on a Premier League club.

In addition to winning the Championship's Golden Boot, the Republic of Ireland international was also named in the Championship Team of the Season.

His impressive form earned him his first senior international appearance for the Republic of Ireland, starting in their 0-0 draw with Belgium in March.

Szmodics has less than two years remaining on his current Blackburn contract, which expires in the summer of 2026.

Kieran McKenna is keen on strengthening his squad and build upon the signings of Omari Hutchinson, Jacob Greaves, and Liam Delap as they prepare for their first top-flight season in over two decades.
