Sancho told some home truths after 'huge wake-up call' at Man United - pundit

Manchester United star Jadon Sancho has been handed a “huge wake-up call” after he was omitted from the England squad.

That is according to Kevin Phillips who, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 21-year-old needs to “knuckle down in training”.

Sancho was axed from the England squad earlier last week (4 November).

As quoted by Sky Sports after announcing the squad, Southgate admitted the youngster’s lack of playing time for Man United is the main reason he has been dropped.

Sancho started on the bench in Saturday’s derby clash against Manchester City.

He came off the bench at halftime but failed to prevent the Red Devils from slipping to a 2-0 defeat.

Phillips claimed the former Man City youngster has to “step up” for Man United after his poor form.

“I’m surprised that Sancho hasn’t got going in a United shirt – we’ve only seen snippets of what he can do,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs.

“His England performances haven’t been good enough either but again, we’ve seen the odd game where he’s done really well.

“Ultimately he needs to step up. This is a huge wake-up call for him. The World Cup isn’t a million miles away and yet he’s not in the England squad.

“I can’t see him leaving the club. Therefore he has to knuckle down in training and grab his chance with both hands when it comes.

Sancho signed for Man United from Borussia Dortmund in the summer window for a reported £73million.

The summer signing has made just three Premier League starts this term, and is yet to provide a goal or assist for the club in all competitions.
