Sandro Tonali to use Arsenal vs Newcastle United as transfer audition, but Gunners will hope he flops

Sandro Tonali could already be eyeing a Newcastle United exit this summer, and the upcoming Arsenal clash may present as an escape route.

The Magpies are destined to finish in the bottom half of the Premier League table, currently sitting 17 points closer to the relegation zone than they are to table toppers Manchester City.

Given that St James’ Park will be devoid of Champions League football next season, some of the biggest names, such as Anthony Gordon and Bruno Guimaraes, are being heavily linked with moves away.

Eddie Howe is under serious pressure in the North East. While he can win some respect back at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday, 25 April, Tonali’s future at Newcastle could already be decided by full-time.

Sandro Tonali could earn his move to Arsenal this weekend

The Italian international was the subject of a late transfer saga during the winter transfer window, with the Gunners reportedly extremely interested in sealing his signature in North London.

Although reports from various journalists and outlets were discredited, those rumours have followed the player throughout the second half of the 2025-26 campaign and into the summer window.

Football Insider understands that Newcastle are already preparing for Tonali’s exit, and it could be Mikel Arteta’s side that trigger a move in the coming weeks should he impress in the game this weekend.

However, the supporters will be praying that the 25-year-old suffers a horror show in the middle of the park, with the Gunners now falling behind in the Premier League title race.

Mikel Arteta under increasing pressure as Man City march ahead

While transfers are a huge part of the game, the full focus at the Emirates Stadium will be on staying ahead in the race for the Premier League trophy, having given up first place this week.

Mick Brown told Football Insider that Arteta is facing “serious” pressure at Arsenal, and without silverware this season, it is unclear exactly how his future could be impacted ahead of next term.

Pep Guardiola’s Man City could only put one goal past Burnley on Tuesday, 22 April, which helped keep the Gunners on level goal difference, and the hope will be that they can take their spot back this weekend.

Obviously, with Howe under pressure, the Magpies will be doing everything in their power to ruin their title chances, and Tonali could play a huge role in that before a potential switch to North London in the summer.
