Scots pundit backs Celtic move for Woodman after source reveals Newcastle talks

Alan Hutton claims Freddie Woodman could solve the goalkeeper problem at Celtic if he is signed this summer.

The former Rangers defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insists the Hoops must improve on Vasilis Barkas and Scott Bain.

On 1st June, Football Insider revealed Celtic are among a cluster of clubs who are keen on signing the former England Under-21 international.

A recruitment source has added that Celtic have spoken to Newcastle about a potential deal for the £8m-valued star.

Woodman, 24, has spent the last two campaigns on loan at this season’s Championship playoff losers Swansea City from Newcastle United.

Bain and Barkas shared goalkeeping duties this season, making 18 and 15 Premiership appearances respectively.

When asked if Woodman could be a good signing for Celtic, Hutton told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, “If he carries on from the season he’s just had, he can be.

“It’s a position they need to sort out. They have really struggled since Fraser Forster went back to Southampton.

“The likes of Bain and Barkas, it just hasn’t worked out for them. You need to be solid at the back when you’re building a team.

“The season Woodman’s had, he’s been absolutely fantastic. You wouldn’t have thought he’ll play week in week out at Newcastle.

“Coming to Celtic would be an amazing opportunity for him to showcase his talents.”

The Crawley-born stopper helped England win the Under 17s World Cup in 2017.

As it stands, he is set to return to Newcastle ahead of pre-season.
