Ex-refs chief blasts VAR decision in Dundee win vs Dundee United after 'mistaken identity'

Published on

Ryan Finnigan should not have been booked in Dundee’s 2-0 victory over Dundee United on Saturday.

That is according to former PGMOL chief and ex-FIFA referee, Keith Hackett, who exclusively told Football Insider that it was a “major error” for VAR to intervene under the criteria of mistaken identity.

Dundee’s solid start to their 2026-27 Scottish Premiership campaign continued at Tannadice Park after an exciting victory in the Dundee derby.

However, the game was not without its controversies when VAR advised David Dickinson to overturn Abdoulaye Yoro's yellow card and then book Finnigan due to mistaken identity.

The Dundee star was astonished by the decision, with the midfielder being booked despite being in possession of the ball when the challenge came in.

Upon watching the replay of the decision, Hackett was appalled at the conclusion the officials came to, insisting that it was a “mess”.

Keith Hackett: Ryan Finnigan booking is a major error by VAR

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Hackett explained why he believed that VAR should not have intervened.

He said: “This is a major error by both the referee and VAR.

“The challenge did not fulfil the criteria for a reckless challenge and is therefore incorrect.

“To then put this under the criteria for mistaken identity is a mess.

“I have no doubt that Willie Collum will be delivering some operational advice to his officials.

“Sadly, someone has a yellow card on his record that he and the club are unable to appeal.”

Pressure mounts on Jim Goodwin at Dundee United

While the Tangerines benefited from this controversial VAR call on Saturday, it did little to turn the result in their favour.

As a result, they have now lost three of their last four matches in all competitions so far this campaign, and are out of the Scottish League Cup.

Admittedly, Dundee United have faced all of last season’s top three in this period, but fans would have still hoped for at least one victory.

With fellow strugglers Kilmarnock up next, three points will be expected at Rugby Park as the club looks to get their season back on track.

If not, Jim Goodwin may find himself under heavy pressure just months into the new season as the pressure mounts on his position.
