Seamus Coleman: Stats prove Everton legend still has more to give as Ireland beat Qatar
Seamus Coleman brought an end to his 17-year stay on Merseyside last week when Everton were beaten by Tottenham on the final day.
The 37-year-old cost £60,000 when he joined from Sligo Rovers in 2009, going on to make nearly 450 appearances and writing himself into Toffee legend.
Coleman has played less and less for Everton in recent years amid recurring injuries, and it was decided that he would call it a day at Hill Dickinson Stadium this summer.
But his performance as the Republic of Ireland beat Qatar 1-0 on Thursday, courtesy of Nathan Collins’ goal, has suggested that he certainly has more left in the tank.
The legendary Everton right-back was rolling back the years for his nation, in a performance that brought up his 80th cap.

Football Insider exclusively revealed in December that Everton want to replace Coleman this summer, although they will lose far more than just his ability on the pitch.
The 37-year-old has been the Toffees’ captain since 2019, with David Moyes facing a huge job to name a replacement who can replicate that type of presence.

The Irishman was a brilliant player, too, flying up and down the right flank in his prime and scoring 28 goals for Everton.
The injuries began for Coleman shortly after his arrival in the Premier League, and worsened as he closed in on a decade at Goodison Park.
The full-back broke his leg in 2017, and various issues plagued him in the years after. Thursday, however, saw Coleman roll back the years for Ireland.
Playing in a right wing-back role, the 37-year-old created two chances, took a shot, completed three successful dribbles and 12 passes into the final third.

The Everton legend also completed four recoveries, won five duels and even won two free-kicks, in an outstanding display.
Irish media laud Coleman display
Coleman is set to be on the lookout for a new club after leaving Everton this summer, and displays like Thursday’s will do his chances no harm.
The Irish Mirror rated him an eight out of 10, and described the 37-year-old’s performance as “ageless”. “Hardly his biggest test, but he clearly has plenty left in the tank,” the website wrote.

Thank you for everything, Seamus. 💙
The Toffees reportedly offered Coleman a coaching role following the decision that he would leave, which would have brought an end to his playing career.
But the defender is clearly not finished, with at least another year on the cards for the veteran.
