Senior snub sees long serving Newcastle star on chopping block ahead of summer
When it comes to goalkeepers at Newcastle United, a lot of the focus seems to be on who might be coming in at St James’ Park.
Slovakian international Martin Dubravka was an arrival in January and has quickly cemented his place as the number one choice for Rafael Benitez, but that has not stopped rumours of other shot stoppers being hunted by the Magpies between the transfer windows.
However, the club’s mid-season break to Spain has highlighted a number of interesting scenarios developing at the club, not least the situation surrounding the club’s long serving goalkeeper Rob Elliot.
Handed the number one shirt at the start of the season, the Republic of Ireland stopper started the campaign as the first choice between the sticks, before losing his place to Karl Darlow.
Injury then put him out of action before Dubravka’s arrival, but everything had gone quiet surrounding the 31-year-old – until the Spain trip.

It was confirmed by BBC Radio Newcastle journalist Matthew Raisbeck via his personal Twitter account that Elliot, who will have spent seven years on Tyneside this summer, had been snubbed from the travelling squad and left behind in the UK.

While the senior star’s absence might be put down to injury, the player himself confirmed he was back in training at the start of February, and this looks more like a snub from Benitez than an enforced absence.
If that is the case, then fans might want to start getting their goodbye notes ready, for Elliot’s head seems well and truly on the chopping block ahead of the summer.
Dubravka looks set to stay, and with Freddie Woodman now vying for a first team role after an impressive loan at Aberdeen, it seems like it will be out with the old guard and in with the new, and Elliot may not see through his seven year anniversary after all.
