Serie A side make approach for Newcastle 22-year-old - Sky journalist

By Harvey Byrne

Serie A side Cagliari have made an approach for Newcastle striker Aleksandar Mitrovic, according to a Sky journalist.

Sky Sports north east reporter Keith Downie claimed via his personal Twitter account on Thursday afternoon that Sky Italy had told him that the Italian side had made a swoop for the Magpies’ 22-year-old.

Mitrovic is currently behind Dwight Gayle and new signing Joselu in the Newcastle striker pecking order and the Serbian has been left as an unused substitute in both of the Magpies’ first two Premier League matches.

He was handed a start in Wednesday evening’s Carabao Cup match against Nottingham Forest, but like many others he struggled in the shock 3-2 defeat after half time despite finding himself on the score sheet.

Last season he also returned just four goals in 25 Championship appearances and Mitrovic, who has three years remaining on his contract may soon start seeking regular football elsewhere.

Football Insider verdict:

Mitrovic has been a disappointing signing for Newcastle since joining from Anderlecht in 2015 for a fee of £13million. In his first season at the club he was known more for being petulant and getting himself sent off. The Championship then provided him with the platform to start making a name for himself, but even in the English second tier he struggled to stand out and was heavily overshadowed by Gayle. Now, with the signing of Joselu it looks like Mitrovic’s days could be running out and Newcastle may definitely consider Cagliari’s approach as they look to raise funds to bring in players themselves.
