Shattering Tottenham blow as attacker to undergo operation and miss rest of season

By Harry Sykes

Erik Lamela will undergo a hip operation and miss the rest of the season, it has been announced.

Tottenham revealed on their official Twitter account on Wednesday afternoon that specialists have advised that the attacking midfielder, 25, must go under the knife to solve the problem that has sidelined him for most of the campaign.

Spurs explained in four separate messages that medical experts have agreed that surgery is “the best course of action” after a “comprehensive rehabilitation process” failed to cure the issue.

Lamela’s operation will take place on Saturday and he will be unable to play again until next season.

Lamela’s planned return to the team has continually been delayed since he suffered a hip injury that has kept him out of the team since 25 October.

The Argentine was initially expected to be out for only a short period but he could not perform at full capacity and underwent a spell of rehab in Rome that ended in January.

Lamela subsequently had a thorough assessment by Tottenham’s medical staff after a scan revealed no issues, but the decision to now finally have the operation after five months will lead to question marks about why it was delayed for so long.

By the start of next season, the attacker would have been absent from the Spurs team for nearly 10 months.

Spurs have coped well while Lamela has been sidelined, but he is a player that manager Mauricio Pochettino considers a crucial member of the squad and who was a mainstay of the team in the 18 months before his injury.

The 24-year-old has made 14 appearances this season, scoring two goals and providing an impressive seven assists.
In total, the 22-times Argentina international has scored 19 goals and supplied 31 assists in 121 matches for Spurs.
