Kenny backs Sheffield United to sign 'unbelievable' Kodjia amid reported update

Jonathan Kodjia has proved he can score goals in the Championship – he is “exactly the kind of player” that Sheffield United need.

That is according to ex-Blades goalkeeper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider after the Star reported that 31-year-old striker is keen to work under Slavisa Jokanovoc once again.

The new United boss signed Kodjia during his time at Qatari club Al-Gharafa where he netted 18 goals in 34 appearances.

Kodjia, whose Al-Gharafa contract runs until 2023, scored 19 goals in 45 Championship appearances for Bristol City in 2015-16.

He moved to Aston Villa the following season and recorded the same number of goals in 36 appearances.

Kenny is a fan of the Ivory Coast’s goalscoring record and claims that his connection with Jokanovic would work in the Blades’ favour.

He told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams: “I think it’s a good thing. I can definitely understand him going after his old players.

“He obviously knows him as a person and knows what he’s going to get from him.

“Kodjia has scored quite a few goals in the Championship. So he might be exactly the kind of player they need.”

“He’s scored goals at that level. Sheffield United need someone who can get them 20 or so goals next season.

“Look at the likes Brentford with Ivan Toney. You need someone who’s going to get you a chunk of your goals.

“They are like gold dust these Championship goalscorers. They are so rare it’s unbelievable.”

United’s top goalscorer last term was David McGoldrick.

Kenny told this site on 6th June that fellow Bramall Lane striker Oli McBurnie would be interested in leaving the Blades for Rangers.
