Sheffield Wednesday fans furious with EFL announcement: ‘Untold damage’

Sheffield Wednesday are set to start their League One campaign next season with a 15-point deduction.

The Championship outfit are currently undergoing a takeover, with David Storch being named as the preferred bidder.

Despite a statement calling for greater flexibility from the businessman on Wednesday, he still appears determined to buy the club.

The new buyers and the club’s administrators are working towards the paperwork being signed in the next 14 days by May 1 amid a rush to get the takeover done by 5 May.

Nevertheless, while Sheffield Wednesday fans have endured an awful 12 months, even if the takeover is completed, the effects of Dejphon Chansiri’s reign are set to continue in League One.

Sheffield Wednesday set to start League One campaign with 15-point deduction

It was confirmed on Wednesday that the Owls would start the upcoming campaign with minus 15 points.

This is because Storch’s £20million bid was not enough to sufficiently cover the money owed to unsecured creditors.

Sheffield Wednesday have been constantly hit with points deductions

As a result, even if the takeover is completed in the coming weeks, the Owls will face another massive task next season to potentially avoid a drop into League Two.

In the current campaign, Sheffield Wednesday have been deducted 18 points in total for breaching finance rules under Chansiri.

Now, after the recent announcement, fans have directed their fury to the EFL as the club continues to be punished for the actions of Chansiri.

Can Sheffield Wednesday bounce back under David Storch?

For the Owls fanbase, it has been a terrible few years.

The club is returning to League One yet again, only years after escaping the third tier.

Yet, for many it is a relief that they could be playing at all, with serious questions once being asked about the club’s survival.

Now, the long-term ask for Storch will be to return Wednesday to the top half of the Championship, and once again fight for Premier League promotion.

While this may take years to get anywhere close to this ambition, especially with the recent points deduction, smart and regular investment into the squad and the club’s facilities could easily see this happen by the end of the decade.

Nevertheless, it remains to be seen how well Storch will be able to run the Owls if he is able to complete the takeover.
