Sheffield Wednesday have opened talks to sign former Aston Villa winger Andre Green, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.

The Championship big guns are keen on landing the 22-year-old, who left the Premier League club when his contract expired in August.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Wednesday are working on a deal to sign Green ahead of the January window.

He is available on a free transfer as he has been without a club for the last four months.

There is strong interest in Green from a number of Championship sides, with the player coming close to joining QPR in the summer window.

Green spent the first half of last season at Preston North End before heading to Charlton Athletic in January.

He made a strong early impression at the Valley, with two goals in his first four matches.

But the versatile forward, who can play on the winger or spearhead the attack, then lost his form in a struggling side who were eventually relegated.

Green headed out of Villa in August after they opted not to take up the option to extend his contract by 12 months.

Dean Smith decided he had multiple other attacking options, with the squad bolstered by three big-name summer arrivals in Ollie Watkins, Ross Barkley and Bertrand Traore.

Green played a key role in Villa’s promotion campaign in 2018-19 and represented his boyhood team 49 times in total, scoring two goals.
