Sometimes the most telling comments can come in the most inconspicuous way.
Tottenham’s manager was talking in his pre-match press conference today when he dropped a bombshell.
“Look, of course the team is doing fantastic in the last two seasons, the club is doing a fantastic job trying to finish our new stadium and our facilities at the training ground,” he said as quoted by football.london.
“Maybe at the end of the season some players must go, others in. It’s like the process in football at different clubs.”
Pochettino is doing a brilliant job at Tottenham.
In all honesty he should be the manager of a club about to take on the Champions League quarter-finals.
Spurs were unlucky that five minutes of losing concentration let them down after 175 minutes of football where they were on top against Juventus the majority of the time.
However, they got knocked out, and they’re out of the Premier League race too.
More worrying for Tottenham fans, though, will be the comment Poch made today, which strongly hint at changes to the senior squad.
Toby Alderweireld is the man currently at the centre of Tottenham contract talks.
He reportedly wants more cash than Tottenham are willing to give him and he holds all the aces.
His current deal runs out in 2020 but there’s a clause that lets him leave for £25m in 2019 if no new deal has been agreed.
That’s way below his market value and if Tottenham can’t reach an agreement before the end of the season then they will have to cash in. And that’s looking increasingly likely.
Daniel Levy has said no Tottenham players will leave unless Spurs want them to. Well that would fit here.
And Poch’s comments sound like the comments of a man resigned to a player leaving.
If we were betting men, we’d put our money on Alderweireld. If Tottenham were going to pay him the money he wants they’d have done it by now.
But it would mean smashing their wage structure and opening a huge can of worms that could spiral out of control.
Alderweireld might have to be sacrificed for the greater good.
