Shock report means Newcastle fans can finally start to dream of a bright future
There are a variety of words which can be used to describe Mike Ashley’s reign as the owner of Newcastle United.
Tumultuous, confrontational, strained, controversial; they might all say different things but the trend is the same, and not one would be considered positive.
The Magpies have had real highs and real lows under the Sports Direct supremo, hitting the heights of a fifth placed finish and a Europa League quarter final appearance, but they are forgotten behind the two relegations and lack of ambition shown from the top, not to mention the string of controversial decisions along the way.
A relegation battle seemed on the cards through to the end of the season but Rafael Benitez has worked his magic and pulled off not only some fantastic results but some brilliant performances from players whose quality has come under question this season.
However, things look as though they might turn bright sooner rather than later.

The Mirror have claimed on their website that Ashley has been holding discussions with Brithish businesswoman Amanda Staveley, fronting an approach from PCP Capital Partners, over a potential sale in the summer – news which will come as a massive shock considering the war of words which broke out between the two parties after a reported failed move in winter.
Getting Ashley out of St James’ Park is crucial if the club are to progress on what looks set to be a season of relative success, and Staveley’s reported plans, which include investment in the training facilities, show a real desire to improve from top to bottom, as well as suggesting long-term plans rather than short-term financial gain on their behalf.
It is a deal Newcastle fans will have been dreaming of for so long, and it means that the Toon Army can finally look towards what will undoubtedly be a brighter future.
In other Newcastle United news, West Ham have tabled a lowball bid for one of Benitez’s favourite players.
