Sky: Newcastle join race to sign £7m playmaker who wants to quit his club

By Harvey Byrne

Sheffield Wednesday boss Carlos Carvalhal has insisted that Newcastle target Fernando Forestieri won’t be leaving the club – despite refusing to play on Saturday.

Sky Sports have claimed that the Magpies may be interested in signing the playmaker after Derby opened the bidding with a £7million offer.

The attacking midfielder, 26, was left out of the Wednesday’s squad that drew 0-0 with Norwich on Saturday after Carvahal revealed that the former Watford player asked not to play in the match.

The former Italy Under-21 international also requested not to play in the club’s opening game against Aston Villa, before he changed his mind at the last minute and scored the winning goal.

However, Carvahal insists that Forestieri will not be leaving the club.

“He came up to me before that game and said he wanted a chat,” said Carvahal to Sky Sports.

“He told me he didn’t want to play against Villa but we talked it through and he had a change of mind and ended up scoring our winner.

“We then trained with Fernando as usual, preparing for the Norwich game, and then he spoke to me again and said he didn’t want to play. This time he didn’t change his mind and we had to do without him.

“It is obviously very disappointing and now we will open up the usual process when something like this happens.

“But it is not a problem for me because Fernando is under contract at this club and the chairman has said he will not be selling anyone.

“He is our player and will not be sold and if this happens again it will be the same situation.”

Forestieri has set the Championship alight since his £3million move from Watford in 2015, scoring 15 goals in last season’s campaign for Wednesday.

The man who developed through the Boca Juniors ranks went on to play for the likes of Genoa, Malaga, Bari and Empoli before his move to England with Watford in 2012, while on loan from Udinese, which saw him impress and earn a permanent move.

Forestieri is under contract at Hillsborough until June 2019, so he will not go cheaply if he is to be sold.

In other Newcastle transfer news, Rafa Benitez has reiterated that Moussa Sissoko still has a contract at the club.
