Tottenham striker Harry Kane is set to be used as a pawn by Real Madrid in their bid to secure Chelsea winger Eden Hazard in the summer, according to a Sky Sports pundit.
Guillem Balague, who is the broadcaster’s in house expert on Spanish football, has claimed in a question and answer held on Sky Sports’ website (09/02, 14:10) that while the European giants would like to sign the English forward, they do not see him leaving Spurs in the summer as a result of his emotional connection to his boyhood club.
However, it is said that Los Blancos could well try and use reported interest in Kane, who has 31 goals in 32 appearances this season, to deflect from their interest in top target Hazard, who is reportedly joined by teammate Thibaut Courtois in being hunted by the La Liga outfit.
Football Insider verdict
Tottenham may well not like the thought of Real feigning interest in their star man in order to secure their true target, but at least this suggests that they have no intention of trying to prise him away. However, it could act as a huge distraction throughout the summer and Spurs will have to do their best to make sure heads, be it Kane’s or another first team star, are not being turned by all the speculation. Plus, a lack of effort in trying to secure his signing now does not mean there will not be a proper hunt ignited later down the line, and so it could well turn into some protracted transfer sage, which is the last thing Tottenham need.
