Sky Sports pundit and former Premier League defender Danny Higginbotham believes it will be “very difficult” for Leeds to make the play-offs at this stage of the season.
The Yorkshire giants were looking to have a strong campaign under summer appointment Garry Monk and for so long they occupied the promotion spots.
However, after their 1-0 defeat against Wolves earlier in the month they dropped out of the promotion places for the first time since November following a dismal run of form which saw them pick up one win from their last six league games.
Now, Higginbotham has told how it is looking like the play-offs could prove a bridge too far as Fulham sit three points ahead with a plus 13 better goal difference with two matches left.
“A couple of weeks a go you looked at Leeds when they got the draw against Newcastle and you thought ‘okay they’re going to be sound, they’re going to be alright and get in there’,” told Higginbotham to Sky Sports News’ Premier League Daily show on Friday morning.
“But, the key to it is, is you look at Leeds, they’re going to have to win, well they’re going to have to guarantee four points from their final two games at least.
“Look at the goal difference. That’s a big factor, especially if it comes against Fulham.
“Fulham and Sheffield Wednesday play each other the week after, well the week after next. The final day of the season. It’s going to be very difficult for Leeds. For so long I thought they were the team that were going to be in there and I thought it was going to come down to the last day battle between Fulham and Sheffield Wednesday where the last game of the season could actually depend upon on the results, but the results could actually become irrelevant.”
Leeds can still catch Reading, Sheffield Wednesday and Fulham in the play-offs with two matches left.
However, with the Royals and the Owls six and five points ahead respectively it would take a huge collapse from either side.
But, Monk’s team will still have belief that they can make it and they are set to host a Norwich team without anything to play for on Saturday before travelling to Wigan on the final day, who are very likely to be already relegated.
In other Leeds news, Paul Merson has predicted the Whites’ weekend clash against Norwich.
