Sky Sports pundit: Everton 23-year-old must be more like Tottenham star

By Matt Farr

Sky Sports pundit Andy Hinchcliffe believes Ross Barkley will need to start performing like Dele Alli if he earns a new long term deal with Everton.

The 23-year-old has just one year left to run on his current deal at Goodison Park, and has yet to put pen to paper on a fresh contract.

But Everton manager Ronald Koeman is keen to see him commit his long term future to the club, handing the attacking midfielder an ultimatum following the win over Leicester on Sunday.

Koeman revealed that Barkley would be offered a new deal, but was quick to add that if he refused to sign, he would be sold.

But while Hinchcliffe believes the comparisons between Barkley and Tottenham star Alli are not good for the Everton man, he insisted that he must perform like his Premier League rival if handed a new deal.

Speaking live on the Premier League Daily Show on Sky Sports on Tuesday morning, he said:

“I was there for the Leicester game and he was my man of the match, he was superb and showed what he is capable of. But he needs to find mind much more consistency.

“The problem is he is getting compared to Dele Alli, and he is just not as good a player as Alli. So that is a bit of a problem for him as well. That’s why he is not getting into the England side.

“Everton clearly want him to stay, but if they do give him a new long term contract, he then has to live up to that and start being the dominant attacking midfielder that we see in Dele Alli.”

With five goals and eight assists from 33 appearances in all competitions this season, Barkley clearly has talent. But he is not performing at the top level on a regular basis, as frustrations continue to grow.

He endured fierce criticism throughout the first half of the campaign, including from his own manager, but his performances in recent weeks suggest he has taken everything on board.

Alli, meanwhile, has contributed an incredible 19 goals and 10 assists for Tottenham this season.

In other Everton news, this defender is ineligible to feature for the Everton first team because of his Premier League move earlier this season.
