Sky Sports pundit delivers verdict on 26-year-old Newcastle ace

By Will Butcher

David Prutton believes Dwight Gayle provides Newcastle with more than just goals.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Prutton believes Gayle’s energy and enthusiasm when leading the Newcastle attack is the reason for his form in front of goal this season.

“The Championship’s top scorer brings a restless energy to Newcastle’s attack,” Prutton said.

“His link-up play is good, he works hard running in behind to keep defenders busy and is being rightly rewarded with the goals he’s getting.”

Since his £10million move to Tyneside, Gayle has been in superb form for the Toon and sits three goals clear at the top of the Championship goalscoring charts.

In just 16 league games for the Toon, the former Crystal Palace forward has struck 16 times including a hat-trick during the 4-0 Championship win against Birmingham on Saturday.

Combining a burst of explosive pace, ability to shoot with little back lift and endless work ethic, Gayle’s hard work has paid off under Rafa Benitez.

Keeping Aleksander Mitrovic and Daryl Murphy out of the side, Gayle is expected to start against Wigan on Wednesday night.

Three points for the Toon will see them hold onto their place at the top of the Championship, after winning 14 of their 20 domestic matches so far.

However, a loss or a draw against the Latics could see Chris Hughton’s Brighton leapfrog Newcastle into first if the Seagulls beat Blackburn away from home.

In other Newcastle news, this injury-prone star is close to making a recovery from injury.
