'Sitting on a pile of cash' - Sky Sports pundit slams three Celtic players as not up to the task
By Richard Parks
Sky Sports pundit Davie Provan has panned Celtic’s January signings as completely inadequate for a club with ambitions of making a big impact in Europe.
The Hoops recruited three players in the January window, attacking midfielders Charly Musonda and Lewis Morgan, and centre-back Marvin Compper.
But ex-Celtic midfielder Provan is convinced that the trio of new arrivals are not good enough as he wondered why his former club did not spend more of the money their domestic success and Champions League participation has generated.
“The last transfer window was an opportunity to bring in the quality and experience that would improve the team,” Provan wrote in the Scottish Sun. “Yet despite the board sitting on a pile of Champions League cash, Rodgers got only one player who could go straight into his side.
“Even then, 32-year-old centre-back Marvin Compper wasn’t eligible for the Zenit tie. For a club still trading on its European heritage, Celtic aren’t showing enough ambition.
“No disrespect to Lewis Morgan and Jack Hendry but neither is ready for Europe. Charly Musonda? Surplus to requirements at Chelsea, Brendan didn’t have enough confidence in the 21-year-old to start him in Russia.”
Football Insider verdict:
Provan is not alone among Celtic observers in wondering how a club with supposed ambitions of an extended European run did not invest significantly in January, especially after Rodgers had claimed the winter window is more important in Scotland than the summer one. The fact is, when it came to the crunch, none of Hoops new arrivals made the team for the matches that mattered. So, why did Celtic hold back las month? Were Rodgers’ hands tied? Or, did he think his squad was already good enough? Hoops fans want and need answers.
In other Celtic news, a £3.4million-valued Hoops player is ready to quit the club because of the arrival of Charly Musonda.
