Sky Sports pundit David Prutton has shared that he believes Tottenham would be “foolish” not to look at Southampton centre-back Virgil van Dijk in the summer.
The 25-year-old Premier League defender has been heavily linked with a move away from the south coast after starring for the club since joining from Celtic in the summer of 2015.
However, this has also led to Southampton putting a high valuation on their player and the Telegraph reported in December that they valued him at £60million.
Meanwhile, Tottenham are currently blessed in the centre-back positions with stars Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen, but Prutton has named Spurs alongside a number of other top Premier League sides who should be looking at Van Dijk.
“If you’re one of Manchester United, Manchester City, Tottenham, Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool you’d be foolish not to look at him,” told Prutton to the Daily Star.
“That next test for him as a footballer is jumping up.
“It’ll take a lot of money to get him, but spending lots of money for these teams is not uncommon.
“Liverpool obviously have a good dialogue and a business relationship with Southampton, although I wouldn’t say that puts them at the front of the queue.
“But you’d think from a business point of view, it probably gives them a head start when it comes to building a rapport and business relationship.
“But the most important word there is business.
“Liverpool would want to get him for the right price – and Southampton will want as much as they can get.”
Prutton points out Liverpool’s past dealings with Southampton, but forgets that Tottenham have also been in close contact with the additions of Mauricio Pochettino and Victor Wanyama in recent years.
Additionally, Pochettino still holds a good rapport with those in charge of the St. Marys club and that could even give Spurs an advantage in any potential deal.
But, what is clear is that with Van Dijk still contracted until 2022 on the south coast, the Hampshire-based club will be demanding a large fee for the currently injured star.
In other Tottenham transfer news, Spurs are closing in on this £16million transfer after a player triggered a reported clause on Sunday.
