'Smashing' Firpo boost expected 'very soon' after Leeds reveal - pundit
Noel Whelan has suggested Junior Firpo will be playing at the “top of his game” as soon as the Leeds United backline can settle.
The former Whites striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed it had been “difficult” for the 25-year-old after injuries to key defensive partners.
WhoScored handed Firpo his best match rating of the season (7.25) so far for his role in the 1-0 win over Watford, as he frustrated in-form winger Ismaïla Sarr over the course of 90 minutes.
Speaking at his press conference before the win over the Hornets (September 30th), Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa claimed the right-back will “shine a lot” when he gets up to speed with the Premier League.
He also admitted he has “optimism” about Firpo’s future performances.
Firpo has made six league appearances for Leeds United this term, just one less than he managed across the whole La Liga season for Barcelona in 20/21.

Whelan claimed he will provide an “advantage” for the Whites once he is up to speed in the top flight.
“There are glimpses there that he is going to be a smashing player,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.
“He’s still adjusting to life here in England, adjusting to his teammates and the pressure and intensity here – because he wasn’t even playing in Spain.
“We can see that there’s a player there, we can see the athleticism in him. He’ll need to get to know his teammates and their strengths and weaknesses.
“But I’ve got no doubt we will see the top of his game very soon, we’re currently seeing it in glimpses.
“He’s the one who is going to be an added advantage for Leeds in future, but we’ve not quite had a settled backline just yet.
“It’s been quite difficult for our defenders to build any momentum.”
