"Something happened behind the scenes" at Leeds United before Djed Spence's sudden exit from the club this month.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Tottenham and Aston Villa defender Alan Hutton questioned if the former loanee was focused or working hard enough to impress Whites boss Daniel Farke.

The Tottenham man's loan was cut short by Leeds and he has now moved to Serie A side Genoa until the end of the season, reportedly as part of Spurs' deal for centre-back Radu Dragusin.

The full-back managed just seven appearances after returning from a ligament injury, but Farke has since suggested that there may have been issues with his "professionalism" and "discipline".

Hutton was adamant that Spence has the potential to be a top-quality player but urged him to get his head down and focus on his football.

"I feel it's a strange one," he told Football Insider.

"I really liked him at Nottingham Forest and then Tottenham came in for him with the big money.

"I was really looking forward to seeing what he was capable of and I thought he might have had a chance under Ange Postecoglou.

"But reading the comments from Daniel Farke, you're thinking that something happened behind the scenes.

"Is he not working hard enough? Is he not focused?

"What I see on the pitch when I see him play is a guy who wants to learn.

"He's got all the attributes to be a modern-day full-back, so it's a shame to see this happen.

"Hopefully he can get his head down with his new loan move and just go and show people what he's capable of."
