Something is 'seriously wrong' with McCarthy at Celtic - pundit

Frank McAvennie insists there is “something wrong” with James McCarthy as he makes his return to the Celtic first team.

The former Hoops hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, admitted he is frustrated by the midfielder’s lack of game time.

On 30 October Ange Postecoglou told the Daily Record that McCarthy, 30, is “back fit now and he’s available”.

He made his return from injury on Thursday night as he played 12 minutes against Ferencvaros.

The summer signing hadn’t played for the Hoops since 3 October and has only made nine appearances for the club.

McAvennie wants to see McCarthy start against DUndee on Sunday so he can prove his fitness.

“There is something wrong with McCarthy,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“If he doesn’t start on Sunday I will be seriously concerned. How can he not be fit yet?

“We keep getting told he’s nearly there and he keeps getting a few cameos then he’s injured again.

“It’s so frustrating. We need him in the midfield because from what I have seen of him he looks brilliant.

“He got a cracking assist for Jota in one of his first games. He has that in his locker as well as that defensive steel.

“Hopefully he can come in and get some minutes under his belt, he needs it.”

Celtic sit four points behind table-toppers Rangers ahead of Sunday’s clash against Dundee.

They missed the chance to close the gap in last weekend’s 0-0 draw with Livingston.

In other news, this pundit claims a “top-quality” signing will be first through the door at Celtic in January.
