'It sounds mad' - Robbie Fowler urges Liverpool to sign this PL player to turn them into champions

By Harry Sykes

Robbie Fowler has urged Liverpool to sign Romelu Lukaku to transform them into champions.

The Anfield legend is convinced that the prolific Everton striker would be the cure for his former club’s inability to beat the Premier League lightweights.

Liverpool have the best record of any side in the top flight this season at securing points against the top six clubs who are their rivals for the Champions League places.

But the Merseysiders are in a late-season battle to nail down a top-four finish after dropping too many points against sides in the bottom half of the division, including in last weekend’s 2-1 defeat to Crystal Palace.

Fowler believes a bona fine line leader who thrives in the penalty box is what is needed to take Liverpool to the next level and believes the prolific scorer from the other side of Stanley Park would solve Klopp’s problems overnight.

“Buy Romelu Lukaku,” wrote Fowler in his Sunday Mirror column. “There, I’ve said it. Let’s face it, he is leaving in the summer and Jurgen Klopp needs a proper striker to lead his line if he’s going to win the Premier League.

“Lukaku doesn’t have quite the attributes to play the pressing game demanded by Klopp, but he does stay up there and asks constant questions of teams who defend deep.

“If the Reds can win their next four games, then they will be in the Champions League, I’m sure. And that will let them attract some top players.

“I know it sounds mad, but I’m convinced that Lukaku should be one of them.”

Lukaku is the Premier League’s top scorer with 24 goals this season, four more than his closest rival Harry Kane.

Everton have reportedly slapped a £100million price tag on the Belgium international after he rejected a new contract at the club.

In other Liverpool transfer news, Klopp is confident of signing the next Gareth Bale for a bargain price of just £10million as the deal of the summer edges closer.
