Luton Town are well placed to sign Aston Villa defender James Bree this week, Football Insider can reveal.

A Villa source has told Football Insider that negotiations are progressing and Luton have tabled a "seven-figure bid" for the versatile right-back.

The 22-year-old has been given the green light to leave the Midlands giants by Dean Smith amid speculation Villa could sign a new right-back.

Villa are unlikely to recoup the £3million paid to sign Bree from boyhood club Barnsley in January 2017.

He has entered the final year of his contract, which expires next summer, and has not played for his parent club for two seasons.

The defender spent last season on loan at Luton after a spell at Ipswich Town in the second half of 2018-19.

Bree has made just 28 appearances for Villa in three-and-a-half years at the club.

Smith's regular right-backs last season were Frederic Guilbert and Ahmed Elmohamady, who made 25 and 17 starts respectively in all competitions.

Bree was a star man of the Luton side last season that narrowly avoided relegation down from the Championship back to League One.

He made 34 league starts among 42 appearances in all competitions, operating mainly at right-back but also filling in at left-back on a number of occasions and weighing in with an impressive eight assists.
