Aston Villa are braced for a massive summer offer for goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez as Man United lead the interested club, Football Insider has learned.
The 28-year-old has had an outstanding debut season at the Midlands giants following his move from Arsenal last September.
A Villa source has told Football Insider that the club are expecting strong interest in Martinez amid indications of a potential “monster” offer coming in during the upcoming window.
This site revealed last month that Martinez is top of United’s summer shopping list.
The Premier League giants have been keeping a close eye on the Argentine since he joined from Arsenal for an initial £17million rising to £20m with add-ons.
That has proved money extremely well spent by Villa, with Martinez helping to transform a backline that leaked 67 goals in 38 league matches last season.
He has kept 14 clean sheets in 30 Premier League matches for Dean Smith’s side this season and has earned rave reviews for his calm and precise distribution as well as his outstanding reflexes and command of his penalty area.
The former Arsenal man is a leading contender to be named in goal in the Premier League team of the year.
United are planning a major overhaul of their keeping ranks by recruiting two senior keepers in the next window.
United’s plan is to keep Dean Henderson and bring in replacements for David de Gea, 30, as well as his former deputy Sergio Romero, 34.
The club’s recruitment team have already begun the process of sourcing two keepers and a significant budget has been set aside.
