Sources: Aston Villa line up big-money bid for Smith Rowe alternative

Aston Villa will turn their attention to luring Dwight McNeil from Burnley if they fail to sign Emile Smith Rowe, Football Insider understands.

The Midlands giants are submitting a third bid of over £32million for the playmaker after Arsenal knocked back their opening two offers.

A Villa source has told Football Insider that manager Dean Smith is prioritising the capture of a versatile forward capable of operating in various positions across the attack.

McNeil remains a key target for Smith after this site first revealed their interest in him on 29th April.

Villa are willing to pay a major fee for McNeil and are expected to submit a bid if they don’t land Smith Rowe, the source explained.

On Tuesday (6th July), Football Insider revealed Villa will return for Smith-Rowe after Arsenal hinted they will sell at the right price.

The Gunners have rejected two offers worth £25million and £30m for their academy product.

A third bid would almost match the club-record fee paid to Norwich for Emi Buendia last month.

Smith’s side paid a fee of £33m rising to £38m including add-ons for the Argentine.

McNeil, 21, has been a first team regular for Burnley since 2018.

He broke into Sean Dyche’s side on the final day of the 2017-18 season and has never looked back.

Another 106 appearances have followed with attacker bouncing back after being released from Manchester United’s academy in 2014.

He so far has seven goals and 16 assists for Burnley to his name.

McNeil has also been capped at England Under 20 and Under 21 level.

His current Turf Moor deal runs until the summer of 2024.
