Sources: Aston Villa now set their sights on Coventry City star Moore

Aston Villa have now set their sights on signing Coventry City goalkeeper Simon Moore, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.

Villa boss Steven Gerrard is looking for cover for first-choice ‘keeper Emiliano Martinez going into the final weeks of the January window.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Moore, 31, has been identified as a target for the Midlands giants after impressing at Coventry this season.

Villa are now weighing up a move for the keeper amid doubts over whether they can lure other potential targets.

The Premier League outfit have also been linked with West Ham’s Darren Randolph and Sheffield United’s Robin Olsen.

But Irons boss David Moyes has insisted Randolph is not for sale and will stay beyond the 31 January cut-off.

Olsen, 32, is currently on loan at Sheffield United from parent club Roma after spending last season loan at Everton.

Moore is in a similar age and experience bracket to the other two England-based keepers.

He has been the number one at Coventry this season after joining last summer from Sheffield United, where he had spent the previous five years.

The keeper has played 22 Championship matches and conceded just 26 goals, maintaining seven clean sheets.

That is an impressive record for the second-tier new boys, who are placed a creditable ninth in the division with half the season now played.

Moore has a contract with Coventry that runs until the summer of 2024.

In other news, Aston Villa have agreed their third January signing after personal terms finalised.
